In the year 2025—declared by Goodfolks as the Year of the Home Garden—Goodfolks is
building numerous business partnerships with collectives, organizations, and individual
businesses to highlight the value of regenerative agriculture, particularly through the Kandyan
Home Garden System. Our partnership with World Vision Lanka is one such significant
collaboration, and arguably one of the most important, given World Vision’s extensive rural
network and commitment to sustainable community development.
The Year of the Home Garden:
A Goodfolks Initiative
The Year of the Home Garden is a private, independent initiative by Goodfolks aimed at
fostering awareness and action around regenerative agriculture. Under this initiative, we are
engaging with key partners such as World Vision Lanka to create impactful change. World
Vision is among the earliest and most significant partners to join us in this journey, bringing their
Through this initiative, we invite the general public to learn about Regenerative Agriculture
and the Kandyan Home Garden System, encouraging individuals to engage in gardening in
any capacity to better understand and connect with nature. This movement extends beyond a
business practice; it is a call to embrace a holistic lifestyle, recognising our place as part of a
cohesive ecosystem rather than assuming we are at its centre.
Introducing World Vision Lanka
World Vision Lanka is a renowned humanitarian organization that works across various sectors
to uplift rural communities. Their work spans across Health and Nutrition, Livelihood and
Enterprise Development, Water and Sanitation, and Child Protection sectors. With the
strong network and expertise in improving livelihoods through sustainable agricultural practices
for over 45 years in Sri Lanka, World Vision Lanka offers the expertise and reach necessary to
drive a transformative approach to rural economies and agriculture in Sri Lanka, for
Goodfolks.
What We Will Be Sourcing
Through this partnership, Goodfolks will be sourcing spices, herbs, fruits, vegetables, and bee
honey from home gardens supported by World Vision. These products are currently available
through select vendors, but Goodfolks is in the process of enabling access to fresh produce
through an all-new e-commerce site. This will allow consumers to enjoy high-quality,
sustainably sourced goods directly from the heart of Sri Lanka’s regenerative farming
communities.
Market Access and Storytelling: Empowering Rural Communities
Our collaboration with World Vision Lanka not only facilitates sustainable sourcing but also
empowers rural communities by providing market access and amplifying their efforts through
storytelling and awareness campaigns. Goodfolks is committed to showcasing the richness of
Sri Lanka’s Kandyan Home Garden System, an age-old practice that fosters biodiversity, food
security, and economic stability for farming families.
Through our platform, we aim to educate consumers and stakeholders on why the Kandyan
Home Garden System, combined with natural farming practices, is ideally suited for Sri Lanka.
Unlike large-scale organic farming, home gardens often match or even exceed organic standards,
as they involve meticulous, hands-on care and diverse cultivation methods that support the land’s
natural ecosystem.
How Home Gardens Complement Organic Farming
Organic certification is widely recognized as a global standard for safe and sustainable farming. However, it is not the only approach to achieving ecological harmony and agricultural resilience. Traditional systems like Sri Lanka’s Kandyan Home Gardens have long demonstrated a holistic, time-tested model of sustainable food production that aligns with many of the core principles of organic farming—while also offering additional benefits:
- Enhanced Biodiversity – Home gardens cultivate a rich ecosystem where diverse plant and animal life coexist, fostering ecological balance and long-term sustainability.
- Climate Adaptability – Sri Lanka’s varied climate, soil types, and landscapes require flexible, regenerative practices. Home gardens naturally evolve with these conditions, whereas standardized certification systems may not always account for local nuances.
- Soil Health and Conservation – Time-honored natural farming methods within home gardens improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, and support healthy crop growth without excessive external inputs.
- Community and Cultural Integration – Rooted in tradition, home gardens are an integral part of local communities, preserving indigenous knowledge, supporting livelihoods, and enhancing food security in ways that commercial organic farming may not fully capture.
Goodfolks’ Commitment to a Sustainable Future

By collaborating with World Vision Lanka, Goodfolks is championing a new era of sustainable
agriculture, bridging the gap between smallholder farmers and conscious consumers
worldwide. This initiative aligns with our core values of promoting ethical sourcing, supporting
rural livelihoods, and preserving Sri Lanka’s ecological heritage.
