The Coconut Story in Detail
History
Early records (the Mahavamsa) indicate that Coconut (Cocos nucifera) was a plantation crop dating back to the time of King Agbodhi (564-598). But any casual glance across the island shows that it is one of the most dominating trees in the island. Sri Lanka is home to three varieties of coconut. These are the tall, dwarf and the endemic King Coconut variety. The trees grow well across the island save for the central highlands. Sri Lanka continues to be one of the world’s largest suppliers of coconut and coconut based products. Today much of the plantations are located in the Coconut Triangle, with Puttalam, Kurunegala and Gampaha serving as the borders.
